Her Majesty The Queen: Behind Closed Doors
“You can imagine how terrifying it is for a woman to be stuck with a very violent partner, feeling that fear every single day. This is something that creeps up very slowly and, far too often, it ends up with women being killed.”
Her Majesty The Queen
Her Majesty The Queen: Behind Closed Doors is a new documentary following The Queen as she works to raise awareness of domestic and sexual violence.
As she meets survivors of domestic abuse and campaigners working to help victims and raise understanding of the issue, The Queen speaks candidly about what drove her to spend the last decade working in this field.
The Queen says: “One of the most difficult things about domestic abuse, to understand, it’s not the bruises and the black eyes, which, unfortunately you see, through violence, this is something that creeps up very slowly and, far too often, it ends up with women being killed.
“You meet somebody, you think they’re wonderful and attractive and love you…and then bit by bit, they start to undermine you. They take away your friends, they take away your family…and then when you start questioning it…these people become very violent.”
One in five adults experience domestic abuse in their lifetime, and it is estimated that around three women die by suicide as a result of domestic abuse every week.
The 90-minute film follows The Queen over the course of a year as she attends official engagements and never before seen private meetings with survivors and change makers who are trying to achieve progress in this field.
As she meets with Diana Parkes, whose daughter, Joanna Simpson, was killed by her estranged husband, The Queen says: “I think she’s so strong, because not many people would be able to survive the death of their daughter. I admire her more than I can say.”
Theresa May, who made coercive and controlling behaviour an offence, tells the film: “I think it’s incredibly important that Her Majesty shows an interest in this issue. We’ve come a long way…but sadly there is more to do. The police get a call about domestic abuse once every 30 seconds.”
Her Majesty The Queen: Behind Closed Doors features interviews with victims of domestic abuse and relatives who have lost loved-ones as well as those working to end the violence.
One victim tells the programme how difficult it is to leave an abusive relationship. She says: “There are invisible chains that are created, especially when you have children. You’re not just thinking about yourself, you’re thinking about people, little human beings, that you’re responsible for.”
Another describes the moment her estranged husband tried to kill her. She says: “I can see him reaching into a bag and I can see him pulling this sawn off shotgun out of the bag. He hit me with the butt of the gun…he pointed the gun at my chest, told me he loved me and pulled the trigger.”
The film also follows Her Majesty as she celebrates International Women’s Day at Buckingham Palace and meets survivors who, if they hadn’t made it to a refuge, could have lost their lives.
Her Majesty The Queen: Behind Closed Doors is a Love Monday production for ITV.

As Saudi Arabia bids to host the FIFA World Cup, a female journalist goes undercover to investigate what life is really like in this increasingly autocratic state.
The Kingdom’s controversial ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman - often referred to as "MBS" - is spending trillions to transform his country and its international image. At great personal risk, the journalist uncovers a very different story. Fearful of surveillance, she discovers evidence of illegal working conditions at MBS’ most high-profile project, The Line, violent protests by workers at another site, and claims by others that they are treated like slaves. She films those caught up in a ferocious crackdown on people who criticise MBS’s plans, and obtains rare footage of shocking conditions in Saudi’s detention system. This is the first time footage of this kind has been filmed by documentary-makers since the Crown Prince's rise to power and this powerful film exposes the disturbing reality behind his transformation of Saudi Arabia.

“My mum always used to say, ‘Life will never give you anything that you can’t cope with.’...I so badly just want to dig a little bit deeper to find out, where did that come from?
Sarah Parish
“What I’d love is a connection back to my parents, during this journey.”
James Nesbitt
DNA Journey with Ancestry returns to ITV1 and ITVX for a fifth series with six new celebrity pairings who set off in pursuit of where they came from and unearth secrets from their past in a life-changing and emotional voyage of discovery.
Using advanced DNA technology and genealogy, the duos will unlock hidden secrets from their family trees as they discover amazing revelations about their descendants, fascinating stories of unknown ancestors and meet with newly found relatives that spark deep connections to the past and present.
Best loved actors and close friends, James Nesbitt and Sarah Parish are on their DNA journey to delve into their family histories. Both of them have recently lost parents and they’re on a quest to find close family connections.
Sarah says: “My mum always used to say, ‘Life will never give you anything that you can’t cope with.’ And you kind of go, ‘Yeah, there is nothing that I can’t cope with, nothing.’ I so badly just want to dig a little bit deeper to find out, where did that come from?
“When they’ve gone, you wish for just one more conversation. One more chat. All those things that you really wanted to ask.”
James says: “In a way I wish my mum and dad were here to see me go on the journey but I suppose, in a way, they will be with me in a sense…but also they’re never that far away. If I look into the album of my memory, they’re there pretty bright.”
Sarah says she idolised her inspirational headteacher mum and is amazed to find the source of passion for education dates back to the1800s and her great great grand-uncle. Moved to tears, she finds out that he successfully campaigned to make education possible for every child in Scotland.
Sarah says: “What an incredible man…that is just extraordinary and how this running theme of education and giving back to people runs so strong through the family. And to know he had such a huge part to play in educating. It’s brilliant, what a great man.
“It’s such a shame my mum is not with us anymore because that would have made her life. She would have been so moved.”
Following on from Sarah’s hero in the family, James finds his great grandfather was particularly adept at evading the law, running an illegal pub in Ireland during the late 1800s.
However, it’s not long before glory is restored as the duo visit the battleground of the Somme, in France, which was the scene of James’ grandfather’s heroic last stand before he became a prisoner of war to the Germans in World War One. The real surprise, however, comes in the revelation that his own father created a written legacy of his grandfather’s experience and donated treasured items to Linen Hall Library in Ireland.
As James reads what his father wrote, he says: “It’s an extraordinary thing to look at. I saw his writing everyday at school. I saw that writing everyday on the chalkboard at school and I would know it from a mile away. I said at the beginning…it would be lovely to be reconnected…with him, and there it is. I’m very grateful.
“I’m overwhelmed. The eight-year-old boy who remembers his grandad with great love and affection probably knew somewhere that he was in the war but he didn’t want to talk about it. I wondered, ‘Was he a hero?’ and I’m delighted that that eight-year-old boy is now sitting in front of you finding out that he was indeed a heroic man.”

The Royle Family stars Ricky Tomlinson and Sue Johnston met when they were first cast as husband and wife in Brookside. A meeting that sparked a 40-year long friendship, bonded by their love of Liverpool, social justice and left-wing politics. Now, using DNA and genealogy they are on a journey that will take them across the UK, reconnecting with lost cousins and unearthing long held family secrets.
Scouser Ricky’s story begins with a surprise in the Lake District, as he discovers his family has roots there. Arriving in the stunning surrounds of Ambleside, Ricky is delighted to discover his ancestor would have worked as a tailor, no doubt crossing paths with literary great and good such as Dickens and Wordsworth as they spent seasons in the town to gather inspiration. But it’s his social conscience that really grabs Ricky’s heart when he realises his relative was instrumental in speaking out for change for those living in poverty.
Ricky says: “I didn’t have a clue. I’m really quite pleased to know that. They were obviously not middle class, but they were certainly a little bit above working class, being a business man, and that fills me with joy actually. I’m made up with that.
“I love the social injustice business, because it plays a part in my everyday life. I hate to see people being put on. You’ve got to do something, otherwise nothing changes.”
Returning to his beloved Liverpool, Ricky is inspired by his relative Jane Cunningham. A trailblazer, she was one of the first ever female journalists in New York in the mid 19th century. Her legacy lives on in a club for women once frequented by Eleanor Roosevelt and Michelle Obama, an annual award for journalism and most specially for Ricky - her books he can hold in his own hands.
Ricky says: “It was my dream to be a writer…I was like a closet writer for years. This is amazing. You’ve shocked me to the core. I’m quite emotional. What an amazing woman. I’m made up. You’ll never hear me stop talking about this.”
Staunch Labour supporter Sue is in for a shock when a DNA alert sends her to a former Conservative Club.
Ricky jokes: “If it all goes wrong can I get another car to go home in? You know, you get tarred with the same brush.”
At the former Conservative Club, Sue discovers she is related to her mortal enemy - a Tory MP. But the early 20th century MP for Tottenham, William Prescott, is a man of his time, a war hero who fights for the best homes for returning soldiers. Ricky agrees to let this one slide.
Sue says: “I couldn’t be prouder of him, and the qualities he had. It’s something I’d aspire to. I admire him.”
But the surprises keep coming and Sue discovers she is related to aristocracy - there’s a Baronet in the family. Sue is ecstatic to connect with William’s grandson, Sir Mark Prescott, 3rd Baronet, a champion trainer for The King’s horse. She also traces her family line six generations back in Scotland.
Ricky jokes with Sue: “You’ll have to up your game a bit now, Sue.”
Reflecting on their DNA Journey, Sue says: “I know how much social justice matters to you and I think you know it does to me. Everybody we have met, on both sides, has been involved and I feel really proud.”
DNA Journey with Ancestry is a Voltage TV, Mitre Studios and Ancestry co-production for ITV.

An international investigation into one of the world’s biggest and most successful cults, the Rajneesh movement, which in the 1970s and 80s had tens of thousands of followers as well as communes in more than 50 countries including the UK. Filmmaker Maroesja Perizonius, herself a child of the Rajneesh communes, makes contact with other former Rajneesh children and, together, they reveal an awful truth about the organisation that has been hidden for forty years. The movement still thrives today yet no one has been called to account for the harm caused to children in its communes. In her unflinching documentary for the BAFTA-winning Exposure strand, Maroesja unmasks perpetrators and demands answers from senior members inside the Cult. And she asks how its guru, Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, was able to build a society with its own moral code - where terrible crimes against children were facilitated and normalised, without any outside intervention.

Two months later, Joan (Sophie Turner) aims to provide a stable home for Kelly (Mia Millichamp-Long) by outdoing her foster parents financially. She joins Boisie (Frank Dillane) in stealing a Stubbs painting, but the plan goes awry when the owner's ex-husband unexpectedly appears. Angry about how Boisie handles it, Joan storms out with cash. She struggles to sell her diamonds to a fence, King (Tomi May), and social services' impending visit forces Joan to reconcile with Boisie. He lets her in, and a new level of trust forms between them.

Kent, 1985. Joan O’Connell (Sophie Turner) is a young mother trapped in a catastrophic relationship with criminal Gary Darvil (Nick Blood). She flees when he brings danger to their door and takes drastic action to keep her six-year-old daughter, Kelly (Mia Millichamp-Long), safe.
Attempting to build a new life, Joan begins working in her sister’s salon, determined to get herself back on her feet, but can’t control her reckless streak. She blags a job at a Jewellers, but the manager, Bernard Jones (Alex Blake), is lecherous. Joan makes an excuse to leave, impetuously stealing several diamonds first.
High on the thrill, Joan celebrates in the pub where she meets Boisie Hannington (Frank Dillane) who runs an antiques shop nearby and proves to be the consummate gentleman. He is also a professional thief. Joan needs money desperately and Boisie offers her a job instead. Joan agrees - could this be the beginning of a successful business relationship, or something more?
