ITV has announced a new documentary focusing on the phone hacking scandal called Tabloids On Trial, due to air on Thursday July 25.

The phone hacking scandal exposed a murky tabloid world where stealing secrets was big business and privacy, meaningless.

It's been almost two decades since the story broke and subsequent legal actions have revealed that hacking was apparently just the start, with victims accusing some of Britain's biggest newspapers of tapping landlines, fitting properties with listening devices and even burglaries to order – in the name of journalism - allegations that have been strongly denied.

Featuring Prince Harry's first major interview since the conclusion of his court case with Mirror Group Newspapers this documentary hears about his mission to continue his fight to expose the illegal tactics of Britain's tabloid press and explores what those in charge at Fleet Street really knew as this scandal unfolded.

ITV News's Rebecca Barry meets high profile celebrities including Hugh Grant, Charlotte Church and Paul Gascoigne as well as people catapulted into the public eye, whose lives were ripped apart by newspapers.

Against a backdrop of new and impending civil trials, Rebecca speaks to the journalists and private investigators who stopped at nothing to get their headline and asks what should happen next.

Tabloids On Trial airs on ITV1 & ITVX at 9pm on Thursday July 25

This is an ITV News/ITN production for ITV1

A Grain of Truth

Short synopsis

The world of organic baking begins to crumble after a series of incidents at the newly revamped Larkton’s Mill.

***

Long synopsis

The superstar couple of the baking world – artisan baker TOM LARKTON and his pâtissière wife CHRISSIE have recently revamped her family’s beautiful old water mill. Following intensive refurbishment, LARKTON’S MILL re-opened with a state-of-the-art water turbine making it fully sustainable, producing 100% organic flour – which has brought the couple huge success and a dedicated online following.

But despite growing up in the village, Chrissie has not been welcomed back with open arms. The popularity of Larkton’s as a destination has caused resentment in Lower Blissingham. Many of the old village businesses are now struggling, traffic has increased, and rumour has it that Larkton’s have plans to expand.

DENISE BANTRIG, the landlady of The Highwayman Inn, is outraged by the impact Larkton’s Mill is having on the village and has organised a protest group against the couple. She is supported by MARIA, who runs the old village café and will not let her business go down without a fight…

While the charismatic power couple may seem to be living the magazine cover dream, things are not quite as perfect as they seem when they become targets of aggressive online hate. The threats appear to escalate when locals boycott the Larkton’s attempt to build bridges with the village, a Midsummer’s Eve Party, embarrassing them in front of the local press. But things take a sinister turn as Chrissie begins to hallucinate and is nearly killed as she staggers into the mill pond in a trance-like state before being saved by head miller GABRIEL.

BARNABY and WINTER are called in to investigate as patrons at the pub were similarly affected. FLEUR has a hunch that the seeded rolls which Chrissie ate were contaminated. But why would the pub, the hub of the protest, have eaten the rolls from Larkton’s Mill?

When a farmer is murdered Barnaby and Winter must race to work out the truth before the killer can strike again. Is this revenge for the poisoned rolls? Or is something hellbent on preventing the success of Larkton’s Mill?

Tom heads to the UK's largest mussel farm in Inverlussa, then prepares delicious mussels cooked in beer for the crew that he's worked alongside - his journey then heads south to Arbroath, which is home to some of the biggest soft fruit farms in the country, as he puts himself to the test against seasonal workers who can pick strawberries staggeringly quickly while also learning about how the conditions of eastern Scotland are perfect for this British favourite. McDonald & Dodds

Ep 1 - The Rule of Three

McDonald and Dodds have spent their weekend tying up a case after a local scandal-breaking journalist dies of anaphylaxis at a party in her own home. They swiftly deduce that there’s foul play afoot, expose the murderer and call it a day, satisfied with another job well done. But their work isn’t over yet…

Separately, a middle-aged woman is found shot dead in a rented flat in Bath. The killer has removed all clues to her identity, but DNA reveals she’s a missing person; ANNE HOLGATE, who vanished on her way home from school, 38 years ago. McDonald and Dodds are intrigued. Where has she been all those years? And who with? And who, after all this time, would want her dead?

The trail begins with her only living relative, her twin brother MARK HOLGATE, now a wealthy financier living the dream in one of Bath’s most prestigious addresses. Despite his obvious grief and trauma, it becomes clear Mark may be concealing a dark and long-buried secret of his own…

McDonald and Dodds will have to unlock the deeply private Mark Holgate and navigate through the tightly wound social circles of Bath’s elites if they are to discover what happened to Anne. If they do, they may be able to put one of Bath’s most wanted professional criminals behind bars. However, McDonald’s drive and Ormond’s personal connection to the case may jeopardise the entire investigation.

Midsomer Murders

The Debt of Lies

Short Synopsis

When the latest resident of a police retirement community is found dead, the tight-knit group regard a murder on their doorstep as an affront and a challenge.

Long synopsis

The party to celebrate the retirement of DCS ELAINE BENNET is an appropriately high-end affair, filled with the great and the good. BARNABY and SARAH are in attendance, and although he does not know DCS Bennet terribly well, Barnaby is representing the station.

At the party, Sarah is introduced to Barnaby’s old gaffer - SEBASTIAN CABOT – who informs the pair that Elaine is his new neighbour – she has recently moved into Challis Court. Set up by an independent charity fifteen years ago, Challis is a collection of desirable apartments within a grand estate providing comfortable and secure housing for retired police officers.

A remark from Sebastian tells Barnaby that Elaine may not be as popular as the turn out suggests – her husband is not even in attendance. Barnaby is further intrigued when he notices Elaine having a heated argument with someone outside the party.

As the event draws to a close, Barnaby sees that behind the handshakes and smiles, some of the officers are harbouring resentment and bitterness. After bidding farewell to her colleagues, Elaine heads home… only to be later found dead in the Bennet’s family car after crashing into a tree.

Barnaby and WINTER arrive at the scene and realise there are no signs of braking, it appears as if Elaine deliberately drove off the road without a seatbelt and died of massive trauma. It is FLEUR who corrects the pair and explains that the brake cable has been cut – this was no accident… And as Challis Court is a gated community that means the killer was inside and they are looking for an ex-officer.

Barnaby and Winter must interview these retired officers who are wise to their line of questioning, and who are keen to offer their expert opinion on the handling of the case. Is an ex-colleague out for revenge? Can Barnaby steer through the lies to catch the killer before it is too late?

UEFA Euro 2024

Spain v Germany

Two of the form teams in the tournament, Germany and Spain, meet in Stuttgart in a repeat of the final from sixteen years ago.

The hosts edged past Denmark in a nervy round of sixteen match played in atrocious weather conditions, thanks in no small part to a controversial penalty given against the unfortunate Joachim Anderson, who minutes earlier had a goal ruled out for offside.

Jamal Musiala continued to justify his star billing with another emphatic finish to seal the victory. By contrast the impressive Spanish made serene progress to the last eight, comfortably seeing off Georgia 4-1 with winger Nico Williams again catching the eye with a superb finish.
