Martin Clunes: Islands of the Pacific

Episode 1

Martin Clunes resumes his epic ocean wide adventure in search of the real Pacific in a new documentary series for ITV.

His voyage is inspired by reading a book given to him when he was a child by his father about the Kon-Tiki expedition across the Pacific. Martin was hooked by their adventure – the unexplored desert islands and the amazing sea life.

The Pacific Ocean, the largest ocean on the planet, covering 63 million square miles, is strewn with tens of thousands of islands with coral atolls, jungle clad mountains, and lava spewing volcanoes. It is rich in animal life and has an astonishing kaleidoscope of humanity.

Martin says: “For centuries we’ve been sold the idea that paradise on earth is here in the Pacific Islands. But in our uncertain, changing world, how much of that paradise is left, and how long can it survive?”

Martin began his journey in 2019 for the first series of Islands of the Pacific. But his travels were halted by the pandemic. He resumed his travels in 2022 to discover more about the magical islands of the Pacific for a new series.

“Three years ago, a worldwide pandemic brought my journey across the Pacific to an abrupt halt.  But, thankfully, I was able to return to do more exploring.”

His first port of call is Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea.  This specific island nation sits just above Australia and is its closest neighbour. From here, there are six hundred islands to explore.  He heads to one of its most isolated and inaccessible areas, the Trobriand Islands.

These islands remained largely unknown until the early part of the 20th century. Since the pandemic there's been no tourism here and no commercial flights either.

Martin’s arrival causes a stir among the islanders who have seen very few outsiders since the pandemic. He is the guest of the villagers of Tilakewa on Kiriwina, the main island of the Trobriands.

With no hotels on the island, the villagers have built  Martin his own house. One of the villagers plants a tree to commemorate Martin’s visit. Martin is honoured and touched.

Kiriwina is forty kilometres long and just under thirteen kilometres at its widest point.

Martin says: “When I flew in, all I could see was a green canopy, but underneath the trees it's filled with villages. It's thought that 26,000 people live on Kiriwina, but no one knows for sure.  Families live close together, sharing the cooking and the childcare.”

Martin visits the village school in the neighbouring village of Kabwaku as they hear the sad news that Queen Elizabeth has died. He joins the children and their teachers as they say prayers in memory of the Queen, and sing the national anthem together.

Martin says: “My time on the Trobriand, staying in the village of Tilakewa, has been really eye opening.  These are people who by our frame of reference don’t have a great deal.  There's no airline landing there, the cruise ships don’t go there, they don’t have industry, they don’t export anything.  They subsistence farm, they grow what they need to eat.

“And yet I've just been blown away by their generosity and their kindness. They accepted us in to their village, and they gave and shared with us everything that they had.”

The next stop on Martin’s travels in Papua New Guinea is New Britain, which sits in the middle of the Bismarck Sea, just 250 kilometres north of the Trobriand Islands.

Melanesian people first came here 40,000 years ago, and more recently, the uninvited colonial powers of Britain, Germany and Japan.  But it is New Britain’s spectacular volcanoes that have literally shaped this island.

In September 1994, two volcanoes simultaneously erupted, spewing out millions of tons of volcanic ash which fell on Rabaul, the island’s capital, with a population of 17,000 people.  The government building still stands, but all the surrounding houses were destroyed, their roofs collapsing under the weight of the ash.

Ima Itikarai who leads the Rabaul Volcanic Observatory explains what happened:

“Before the eruption happened activity was increasing. Eventually the eruption happened around 6 o'clock in the morning from Tavurvur and then about 15 minutes later, on the other side of the harbour exploded very violently.” He predicts the volcanoes will erupt again.

Martin learns that there has been some benefit to wildlife from the eruptions. The landscape of bush and volcanic sand is home to the Megapode bird, which don’t nest. They find a convenient heat source for their eggs in the hot volcanic sand.

Papua New Guinea became fully independent from Britain and Australia in 1975. Martin’s stay in East New Britain coincides with the Independence Day celebrations. The parade is part of the Frangipani Festival, named after the only flowers that were left after the volcano eruptions.

Before leaving Papua New Guinea there's one last place Martin wants to visit —Gilibwa - to meet the community of subsistence fishermen who have been fighting to survive the rising sea levels.

For centuries their village has existed on the beach here.  Where once there was an entire village, now just seven families still live on the beach.  The same storm that washed away the church, graveyard and many houses on the beach also washed away the road.

With no road and a two-day canoe journey to the nearest town, the inhabitants here are largely marooned

Martin says: “Over the centuries, the people of Papua New Guinea have endured armed invaders, exploding volcanoes, well intentioned missionaries, and now rising sea levels.

“My time on Papua New Guinea has come to an end, and I'm reminded how living on a Pacific Island is a fragile existence, and how humanity needs to adapt to survive in such a changing world.”

This gripping courtroom drama tells the story of 12 ordinary Australians who are selected for jury duty in a murder trial as traumatising as it is controversial, in which a woman stands accused of killing her teenage niece. Behind the façade of their anonymity, these twelve ordinary people bring with them their own histories. Lives that are as complex as the trial, full of fractured dreams, shameful secrets, hope, fears, personal trauma, and prejudice. Through the multiple lenses of these jurors, audiences will see the fragility and imbalances of the law, and the chaotic and flawed way we attempt to determine justice in our society.

The limited series also stars Marta Dusseldorp (Wentworth, Stateless, A Place to Call Home) and Kate Mulvany (Fighting Season, Lambs of God, Hunters).

The 10-episode crime drama commissioned by the FOXTEL Group, is produced by Warner Bros. International Television Production Australia in partnership with Easy Tiger Productions with major production investment from Screen Australia in association with FOXTEL.

Financed with support from Screen NSW. The series is distributed globally by FIFTH SEASON. Executive Producers for the Foxtel Group are Brian Walsh and Penny Win.

The Twelve begins on the first day of jury selection in a complicated trial.

Twelve ordinary citizens from diverse backgrounds have been summoned to the Supreme Court to decide the fate of a woman charged with murder. Is she guilty or innocent? Is it even a murder? Her fourteen-year-old niece went missing when in her care, but a body has never been found and it isn’t clear what motive she would have for killing her. Her own family is divided about her guilt or innocence, what hope does the jury have of reaching the truth?

Over ten episodes we explore the lives and loves of the people who will decide the fate of the accused, their histories, their conflicts, their families, their secrets: a gentle suburban mum whose husband’s adoration may be hiding coercion, a builder torn away from his responsibilities, a star student struggling with being a role model to his indigenous community, a chronic gambler with money problems, a brash millennial plagued by traumatic memories.

The values they bring and the challenges they confront will shape the different ways they react to the unfolding trial. Being on a jury for a long complex trial is tough and time consuming, the pressures of the trial impact upon the personal lives of the jurors. They are forced to contemplate the darker side of human nature while being forbidden to speak to anyone outside the jury room about the evidence they confront each day. Alliances become friendships, relationships form and come apart as they learn the contradictory details of what may be a horrible crime, or a tragic accident or simply a runaway teen who knows how to hide. When they reach a verdict, it will change the lives of everyone involved in the trial.

Episode 6

When the jurors are taken to Kate’s house to observe a demonstration of the Crown’s theory, it ends in disaster for the Defence when someone tampers with Kate’s studio. Back in the courtroom, an eyewitness testifies he saw Kate at 4am out on the water the night Claire disappeared. Kate’s brother, Robbie, takes the stand, before the jurors are left perplexed when a man from Kate’s past causes a disturbance in the courtroom. Inside the jury room, the jurors’ debate and discuss the logistics of the prosecution’s theory - could Kate really have disposed of Claire’s body by herself? Meanwhile, Alexi gets into trouble trying to give money to Luiz’ widow, whilst Corrie becomes all too aware of his lack of transparency with her. Georgina is fired from her job because of Jamie and is surprised to find a helping hand from Garry, and Jarrod finds a connection with his university’s secretary, Yvette.

Episode 5

Claire’s father is called to the stand. Nathan paints Kate as a sexual predator, who groomed Claire before murdering her. However, Colby throws suspicion back onto Nathan when it’s revealed he had a false online persona, posing as a young girl in order to monitor Claire’s social media. The courtroom is also given a taste of his temper when Colby successfully gets under his skin. Despite trying to focus on the task at hand, some jurors struggle with the mounting pressures of life outside the jury room. Georgina’s husband’s controlling behaviour goes from bad to worse, Jarrod tries to get his scholarship money back, and Alexi is plagued with guilt over Luiz’ death.

Series overview

This two-part series follows the late Paul O’Grady as he travels through Thailand and Laos to celebrate the wonderful work done by elephant conservation centres to rescue, rehabilitate and protect these most majestic, but vulnerable, of animals. Filmed in the months before his sudden and unexpected death, this was Paul’s final TV project and one that he was incredibly passionate about.

Thailand has the largest number of elephant rescue centres in the world, while Laos is nicknamed the ‘land of a million elephants’, and in each episode, Paul travels across the region to roll up his sleeves and muck in to help out at a different rescue centre.  Along the way, Paul also heads out from the sanctuaries to grab a slice of local life by exploring nearby colourful markets, temples and apothecaries and trying local cuisine.

The series highlights challenges faced by elephants in the region and as ever, Paul’s love for animals shines throughout. The tone is warm, playful and heartfelt and always characterised by his much-loved wit and humour.

Episode 2

In this episode, Paul heads south near the beaches of Hua Hin to the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand, the country’s biggest wildlife hospital. Looking after any animal in need, the WFFT is sanctuary to 24 elephants mostly rescued from ‘entertainment camps’, where they performed in circuses, or work tirelessly in trekking camps taking holidaymakers for a ride.

Paul soon falls in love with 37-year-old Pun, who had been used for breeding as selling on baby elephants is a highly lucrative business for the unscrupulous. Paul oversees Pun having a full body MOT to assess her health following years spent being pregnant. This gives him the chance to enjoy a fascinating close-up view of an elephant’s extraordinary anatomy as he inspects Pun’s trunk, teeth, feet, ears and tail. He then learns Pun’s birthday is coming up and he can’t resist making her a super-sized birthday cake - although popping down to the local fruit stall for ingredients proves anything but simple.

Paul also meets 57-year-old Jum Nong, who is scarred both physically and mentally from a lifetime working in the tourist trade. She now has trouble sleeping so Paul sets to work making her a comfy bed to hopefully help her get some shut eye.

Aside from elephants, the WFFT rescue a huge array of wild animals and Paul is given privileged access to meet their newest residents – 11 Bengal tigers rehomed from a local zoo. They include 19-year-old Susu who has arrived with a limp, so Paul helps the team to sedate her and then take her to the centre’s hospital for a full check-up and x-ray. This is the first time Paul has been up, close and personal to a tiger, and it’s an experience he’ll never forget.

Paul then crosses the Thailand border to neighbouring Laos – it’s nicknamed the ‘land of a million elephants’ but sadly in reality, there are now less than 800 left in the country. To help arrest this startling decline in numbers, Paul heads to the Elephant Conservation Centre near Luang Prabang in the north, home to the country’s only breeding programme, to learn about what is being done to try and boost the elephant population.

Set deep inside 20 square miles of stunning jungle, Paul arrives at the ECC by longboat and is soon put to work honing his elephant midwife skills by overseeing ovulation tests for some of the centre’s thirty females. Elephants only ovulate three or four times a year, so timing is everything if a female is going to conceive. The final elephant biologist Anabel introduces Paul to is May Bo Pan, who is 12 months pregnant. She’s in to have her progesterone levels checked, and there’s an anxious wait while her latest blood tests are analysed.

While they wait, Anabel takes Paul deeper into the Laotian jungle so he can play matchmaker to a young bull elephant meeting a new date. Twenty-year old Phai Kham Sing is a bit clueless when it comes to meeting females but with a few words of advice from Paul, signs look promising he might get the hang of the mating game.

Paul also witnesses the heart-warming signs of a positive future ahead for elephants in Laos when he meets the ECC’s two most precious residents – babies Phu Noy and Mae Noy, who, hopefully, will one day be released into the wild.

Paul then ends his elephant adventure by taking part in a stunning Bacci ceremony, a religious Laotian ritual overseen by a local shaman to help bring good luck and fortune for the future of the Asian elephant. It’s an emotional moment for Paul giving him the chance to reflect back on all the amazing elephants he’s met during his time in South East Asia.

Episode 4

As Kate’s artwork is put before the Court, Bloom focuses on its preoccupation with mortality and suggests Kate orchestrated Claire’s death for her final work. A complicated mental health diagnosis is revealed, which is particularly pertinent for Vanessa. The jury room is once again divided as they begin to untangle the mammoth question in front of them - was Kate Lawson’s artwork a blueprint for murder? Meanwhile, Corrie is haunted by the horrific crime from her past, which Garry uses in an attempt to push her off the jury. Jarrod seeks answers from Lowanna, and Alexi’s worst fears are confirmed.

Paul O’Grady’s Great Elephant Adventure

Episode 1

In this opening episode, Paul travels to the hills surrounding the ancient city of Chiang Mai, 400 miles north of Bangkok and known as the elephant capital of Thailand.

There are around 7000 elephants in Thailand, around half of which are domesticated and unable to live on their own in the wild. They often lead very tough lives working in the tourism industry and once they get injured or become too old to work, their futures can come under real theat.

Paul visits The Elephant Nature Park, which is the largest elephant rescue centre in Thailand, providing refuge and a retirement home for ex-working elephants since it was founded over 20 years ago by world renowned conservationist Lek Chailert.

The park currently provides sanctuary to 116 elephants who have escaped a hard life’s graft in the logging and tourism industries and Paul is overwhelmed:

“Aren’t they wonderful? This is heaven. I mean, I’m so privileged to get this close to an elephant, you don’t do this every day of your life.”

As she introduces Paul to some of the elephants, Lek explains: “When we rescue them, they are traumatised from their abuse. They (learn to) trust, because they receive love.”

Most of the elephants are over 65-years-old and many of the jungle OAPs have a similar story. They were often used for the logging industry before it was outlawed in 1989. Many were then forced to carry tourists around in riding camps, resulting in significant long-term injuries.

Despite becoming arthritic after years of hard work, female elephant Mae Sri was forced to continue carrying tourists which left her barely able to walk. Paul is horrified by the burns on her legs, where she was burnt with fire to get her to stand. To help ease her aches and pains, every day the vet team treat her wounds and Paul is more than happy to get stuck in to help soothe her arthritis with a Thai massage on her legs.

It’s not all oldies though, and Paul also enjoys helping one-year-old babies Chobah and Pyimee let off steam. The babies were rescued from the circus with their Mum, who had also been used for breeding. Paul enjoys a unique game of football with them, to help keep them stimulated:

“They are so cute, baby elephants. They are like puppies aren’t they? A big puppy. Look at that, not a care in the world. What I love is, they are safe, that’s the thing. No circus for this lot.”

Paul also meets 75-year-old elephant Dujdao, who needs a daily herbal scrub to soothe her badly inflamed skin and also has to follow a special diet.

The elephants munch through 150 kilos of food a day and when they lose their teeth from old age it’s a real issue for the elderly elephants. So the team have come up with a special soft food diet for them and Paul is on dinner duty, helping to wrap mashed bananas and rice into banana leaf parcels, which are then steamed.

Paul says: “It’s so beautiful here, it’s just a place of refuge for them, where they can come and live out the rest of their days…and the people who work here, they are just remarkable.”

While at the park Paul is also unable to resist paying a visit to the dog rescue centre, which is home to 650 of his beloved canines, most of which have disabilities after being hit by cars or motorbikes and needing special care.

Next, Paul heads to Sukhothai to meet extraordinary British expat Katherine who quit the rat-race in London to set up Boon Lotts Elephant sanctuary in rural Thailand 15 years ago.  This stunning 500-acre jungle playground is home to her nine elephants, and she takes on the challenge of teaching Paul how to become a mahout, an elephant handler.

Charged with looking after three of Katherine’s elephants, aka the Gossip Girls who all have foot problems that need constant attention, Paul is also given a crash course on how to use a machete, as well as learning the unusual vocabulary that man and elephant share – to mixed results...

While in the area, Paul also pays a visit to the Friends of the Asian Elephant hospital, the world’s first ever elephant hospital.  Here he meets the extraordinary elephant Motala, who lost a leg after standing on a land mine.  Now recovered, Paul’s on hand to help take her out for a walk – with the use of an extraordinary prosthetic leg.

Episode 2

The Crown calls Detective Sam Chedid to the stand. Various pieces of evidence are introduced to the Court, including a disturbing video of Claire. During his cross examination, Colby throws suspicion onto Nathan Spears, as he points out the Detective’s failure to investigate him as a potential suspect. The jurors share polarizing opinions on the trial thus far, as different personalities begin to rub each other the wrong way. Garry is offered a dubious bribe - his debts cleared in exchange for information on his fellow jurors. Meanwhile, Alexi makes a bad decision when confronted with a horrific work-place accident, and Jarrod finds himself unexpectedly arrested.
