As it happened: the sudden flood that swept through a Cornish village

A flash flood devastated the Cornish village of Coverack on Tuesday - here's how it all unfolded.

A huge storm formed over the sea off the South coast of Devon and Cornwall at lunchtime. This live lightning map showed where any bolt of lightning was detected.

A severe weather warning issued by the Met Office came into force.

The thundery showers moving north across the West Country caused some localised hail in Coverack.

As the rain cleared the water begins to surge through the village.

The harbour front became a waterfall - the main road, a river.

The main route in and out of the village was damaged by the surge - we spoke to Alison, of Lizard Holiday Cottages, who told us how she fought her way through back gardens to check on tenants.

A bus driver was also rescued after being forced to stop because of the swell of water:

An emergency centre was opened in Cornwall's County Hall in the wake of the flash flood.

Emergency services from across the Lizard Peninsula head to the village.

A couple in their 70s had to be airlifted to safety as the water rose around their home:

Around 50 homes have been affected by flooding and water damage.

A meeting has been arranged for Wednesday morning to discuss how to support the people of Coverack.
