Timeline: Chief Constable Nick Gargan

Nick Gargan, the Chief Constable of Avon and Somerset Police, will learn his fate today at a sanction hearing, after being found guilty of eight counts of misconduct.

Below is a timeline of events leading up to today's hearing:

Nick Gargan was appointed to the role of Chief Constable by Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens in March 2013.

But shortly after he was suspended from the role in May, after allegations of inappropriate behaviour towards women.

Following his suspension, the IPCC began an investigation into the allegations against him.

During a search of his computer, they then said they had found evidence that he had leaked internal emails to people outside the police force.

In October 2014, following the independent investigation, the IPCC concluded that there were no grounds for criminal charges.

But they did pass their findings on to the Police and Crime Commissioner.

On 31st October 2014, Sue Mountstevens decided that there was enough evidence for a gross misconduct hearing.

In July 2015, Nick Gargan faced ten charges of gross misconduct and three of misconduct.

He was found guilty of eight misconduct charges but not of gross misconduct at a private panel hearing.

On 6th August 2015, the PCC recommended that Nick Gargan should be given eight final written warnings as a sanction for his misconduct.

But since this decision was made, there have been repeated calls for the Chief Constable to step down from his role.

Including a petition signed by more than a thousand people calling for the Chief Constable of Avon and Somerset Police to resign.
