A further 70 coronavirus deaths in hospitals in the Anglia region announced on Sunday

The number of patients dying with coronavirus in hospitals in the Anglia region has risen by 70 to 1,764.

It is the lowest daily increase in the area for eight days but the reporting rate is sometimes lower at the weekend.

The figures announced by NHS England cover the period up to 5pm on Saturday 18 April 2020 but do not include people who have died in care homes, in hospices or in their own homes.

The Luton & Dunstable Hospital in Bedfordshire announced on Sunday there had been a further eight deaths taking the total at the unit to 116.

The highest number of deaths recorded in a single hospital in the Anglia region has been at Basildon Hospital in Essex.

Across the UK, a total of 16,060 patients have died in hospital after testing positive for coronavirus as of 5pm on Saturday, the Department of Health said, up by 596 from 15,464 the day before.

A further 344 tested positive for coronavirus in the Anglia region in the 24 hours to 9am on Sunday 19 April brining the total number of confirmed cases in the area to 8,740.

It represents a daily rise in cases of 4% following a 5% rise on both Saturday and Friday.

The largest percentage increase in cases in the region was in Cambridgeshire where they were up by 8% from 590 to 638. There was a 7% increase in Northamptonshire from 820 to 877.

The Bedfordshire figures are the local authorities of Bedford, Luton and Central Bedfordshire combined. Cambridgeshire includes Peterborough and Essex includes Southend and Thurrock.
