Parent fights for their child's right to remain genderless
What someone’s genitals look like when they are born doesn’t actually give us an accurate indication of who they will be
A non-binary parent from Canada is fighting a legal battle to allow their child to have an 'undefined gender'.
Kori Doty's eight-month-old child, Searyl Atli, has been issued with a health card stating their sex is undefined, but officials say the eight-month-old baby cannot get a birth certificate unless a gender is determined.
Kori joined us live from Canada this morning and told Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid: “Searyl’s private parts are private, whether they conform to the biological standard or not, like you said, it’s not actually about the definition and gender identity which will develop later in life.
“What someone's genitals look like when they are born doesn’t actually give us an accurate indication of who they will be.”
Piers then asked what would happen if Searyl wanted to identify as a monkey. Kori answered: “We will probably have some important conversations about beasties and science and things that are appropriate.
“Because they are human beings, they are a human being, and we are talking about gender, we are not talking about species.
“They are a human being I’m raising them as a human being.”
