'I amputated my own arm'
In August 1998, Mark Goddard, 44, was involved in a motorbike accident which left him with a severely injured left hand. As the years passed, the surface wounds healed, but the pain from the internal injuries persisted and became intolerable.
Seen regularly by the Pain Clinic at his local hospital, Mark became frustrated with what he perceived as their lack of understanding and unwillingness to provide effective treatment. So, on 17th March 2014, Mark took drastic action.
He went out to his garden shed, where he had hidden a home-made guillotine and performed a DIY amputation. Now, eight weeks on, Mark is still in considerable pain, but is happy that he is now on the path to more effective medical treatment.
