First aid: Immediate steps to treat burns
For burns, you need to, first of all, stop the burning process.
If somebody is on fire:
Roll them on the floor
Use a blanket, to pat them out.
And then you need to cool the burn down. Run the burn under lukewarm or cold water for 20 minutes, use running water, not stagnant water.
If they are wearing clothing or jewellery, that you can remove, do so, because the area will swell. But if it's stuck leave it, Don't try and rip it off.
If you've got a large burn, you can cover it with cling film.
Call for an ambulance for a burn if the burn is bigger than the person's hand, if it's on their face, if it's over a joint, if it's on the genitals, or if it's on a child.
Remember to keep the person warm. Although they've been burned one of the things that your skin does is about fluid, balance and temperature control, and they can very easily go into shock. So you want the rest of them to be warm.
