First aid: How to perform CPR

There are two different types of CPR, Adult CPR and child CPR. With adults, you only need to do chest compressions, you do not need to do rescue breaths.

Put one hand in the middle of the chest, take the second hand, and interlock it, press down, keeping your elbows nice and straight to a third of the depth of the chest, that's about five or six centimeters.

You want to do compressions to the song 'Stayin Alive' or 'Nellie the Elephant' as that's between 100 and 120 beats per minute.

We don't do rescue breaths anymore because on adults, it's less likely that it's going to be a respiratory issue, It's more likely to be a heart issue.

With babies, it is most likely to be a respiratory problem causing the cardiac arrest. So with a baby, you do want to give five rescue breaths. You gently pop your hand on the top of their head, and you give it a little tilt. You put your finger gently on their chin and you also chin lift.

You want to ensure that you've got your mouth around their nose and their mouth, so you've got a complete seal. Then blow gently for around a second. Do this five times. You see their chest gently rising.

Then once you've done that five times, you do your chest compressions. Now chest compressions are different and you don't need to use your whole hand for a child. You just need to use two fingers on the centre of their chest.

Again, you want to ensure that you're pressing down about a third and keeping their head back.
