Cornish MP would challenge government over tougher rules on term-time holidays

Ministers say every day of school missed can damage a child's education, and have vowed to toughen up legislation.

A Cornish MP says he'll vote against any government attempts to change the law on term-time holidays by school children.

Steve Double, Conservative member for St Austell & Newquay, was speaking in the wake of confusion caused by a High Court ruling on the issue.

The court ruled that a father who refused to pay a £120 fine for taking his daughter out of school to go on holiday had "no case to answer" - because his little girl had regularly attended school during the rest of the year.

Ministers say every day of school missed can damage a child's education, and have vowed to close the "loophole."

They could now proceed with plans to toughen up term time holiday rules - which has been challenged by several MPs from Devon and Cornwall.
