School fines ruling could mean cheaper holidays for millions
If your child attends an English state school and otherwise has a high attendance record, today's High Court ruling means they can go on term time holiday without a fine.
Good attendance means 90% and above. That will make it possible for far more parents to avoid the price peaks.
However, there is no indication yet on how the government, councils and schools will change their policies and guidelines to take this ruling into account.
Stand by for a backlash.
The Department For Education says attendance is crucial and even a week off can harm a child's success.
Local authorities and teachers too will want clarification on what control they still have over absence policy.
They will be monitoring this summer's unauthorised absences and building a case in support of restrictions on term time holidays.
