Social distancing in Jersey until late 2021?

Social distancing could continue in Jersey for the next 18 months.

The Chief Minister today confirmed the two metre rule could remain in place until a coronavirus vaccine is available, adding that could be "six to twelve to eighteen months".

It came on the day he confirmed the government will begin publishing Guernsey-style data on who has died from Covid-19. Of the 19 deaths, so far, seven are in care homes and all are aged 60 or over.

Senator John Le Fondré also announced the first meeting of ministers to discuss the long term economic recovery from the pandemic, adding businesses would be invited to join working groups to share their thinking.

The government's lockdown exit plan will now be published on Friday - having previously said it would be by Thursday - and is likely to outline a phased relaxation of current restrictions and details of the types of businesses that may be able to reopen.

Elsewhere in today's press conference, the Chief Minister confirmed:

  • More than 16,000 people had completed the household survey to self-report whether they'd had symptoms of coronavirus

  • That self-isolation for anybody arriving into the island will continue for at least the next fortnight

  • That the experts who produce the modelling of the virus in the island will be made available for interview and questioning on a more regular basis, like they are in Guernsey and the UK
