Inquest opens into death Guernsey man Matthew Bourgaize

The inquest into the death of Guernsey man Matthew Bourgaize has opened at the Royal Court.

Mr Bourgaize went missing when he walked out of the mental health facility the Oberlands Centre in January.

His girlfriend Kelsey Le Page had been visiting Mr Bourgaize on the afternoon of Saturday 11 January.

He had been an inpatient at the Crevichon ward since the start of the year.

At the hearing Miss Le Page, their new born baby, and his mother, listened to Inspector Nigel Burnard from Guernsey Police tell the hearing what had happened.

The couple had met in the foyer, they'd been chatting and he had been telling her that he didn't like staying there and he was bored.

Whilst she went to the toilet - he had left the building through the front door.

The inquest was told he was last spotted on CCTV that afternoon, heading in the direction of Fermain Bay.

The body of Mr Bourgaize was found on Sunday 9 February in Havelet Bay on Guernsey's east coast.

A post-mortem examination was carried and DNA samples established that the body found was that of Mr Bourgaize.

The cause of death is not yet confirmed and the police are continuing their investigation.

Permission was given for the release of Mr Bourgaize's body for burial or cremation.

The inquest has been adjourned and no date has been set for the second hearing.
