Deputy u-turns on plan to stand for vacant Education seat after "senior" intervention

A Guernsey deputy who resigned from the Education Committee has u-turned on his decision to stand for his vacant seat, after a "senior States member" intervened.

Deputy Marc Leadbeater stepped down after Deputy Emilie Yerby called for the whole committee to leave their jobs, because of concerns that the majority didn't support the move towards an all inclusive education system.

But, he announced this morning that he would stand again for his seat, based on the support of Deputy Paul Le Pelley and Deputy Carl Meerveld, President and Vice-President of the Committee.

Since then a "senior States member" persuaded the pair to remove their backing.

That led to Deputy Leadbeater telling the states, in the last hour, that he won't rely on the floor for backing and will not return to the Education Committee at all.

The four remaining Committee members are facing a vote of no confidence in the States today.
