Leicestershire women remembers friends' cancer treatment with charity 'Gem'

The ITV Central Pride of Britain Regional Fundraising Award is given to an individual from the East Midlands, who has gone above and beyond for others, and raised money for charity.

Ten years ago Sally set up her own charity called Gems. It was named to pay tribute to four close friends that she supported through cancer treatment .

Three of them sadly passed away but Sally was so struck by the lack of comfortable  facilities for patients having chemotherapy at the Leicester royal infirmary she decided to raise money to make their stay in hospital more bearable.

"We used to talk about what we could do to make money to make it better, where we were and that how Sally started. The next thing she is saying I'm doing this, and we all had to do it."

Today, Sally's at an open farm event in Markfield in Leicestershire.  Everything she sells has been donated.

All the money raised supports the chemotherapy suite at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Money raised so far has helped refurbish the day rooms where patients get their treatment, and helped install cafe.

She's also revamped the disused balconies to make them a calming, welcoming space.  In the last decade she's given £275,000 to the department to improve patient care.

Sally's current project is raising five hundred thousand pounds to pay for an extension to the chemotherapy suite so that more patients can receive potentially life saving treatment.

Seven thousand pounds has already been raised towards her new target.
