Teacher donates face shields to care home hit with eight coronavirus deaths
A care home in Staffordshire where eight residents have died after contracting coronavirus is to receive a donation of 30 face shields from a local teacher.
In just over three weeks, there have been 24 deaths at the nursing home, including the eight who tested positive, while the other people were not tested for the virus.
Now, teacher Lee McCue has put his school’s 3D printer into action by making dozens of face shields to help protect staff against the disease.
After learning about the deaths, Lee said “we’ve got to do something” and set up a mini-production line in his spare time, fitting it around his teaching commitments at Madeley School.
Before long, several pupils and his wife and children also joined in with theefforts.
The 42-year-old, from Norton Green, came up with the idea after hearing about the shortages of personal protective equipment.
As Madeley’s subject leader for design and technology, he realised he could help by using the 3D printer at work.
Lee said: "I'm taking 30 up [to Bradwell Hall]. All their staff are locked down in there. I read the story yesterday on the Sentinel coronavirus group on Facebook.
In a statement, Edward Twigge, owner of the care home said the past three weeks have been "truly heart-breaking for everyone involved".
