Frustrated resident plants flowers in potholes
A frustrated resident planted a flower in pothole in an attempt to get it noticed by council bosses – and it was filled hours later.
The hazard on a street in Clarendon Park, Leicester, was several inches deep and people who lived on Springfield Road were concerned it would be a danger to traffic and cyclists.
Leicester Green Party member Mags Lewis, who lives in Clarendon Park, says attempts were made to report it to Leicester City Council.
However she said the council’s online reporting froze up when she tried to use it.
Then, when she attempted to phone in a report on Wednesday morning (August 28), she was presented with various ‘press one for….’ options before she was cut off after five minutes leaving her with no option to speak to a person.
Mags said: “It was very frustrating. I wanted to report this really big pothole because it was dangerous but I couldn’t do it."
Mags Lewis then emailed a picture of the flowers to her local councillors and directly to senior council officers.
She said: “I wasn’t expecting much to happen. There are a lot of potholes on the roads that should have been fixed more quickly.
“But they filled it. [It's] great - it took a bit of direct action but I’m pleased.
“Perhaps filling potholes with flowers is the key to getting them filled more quickly.”
A Leicester City Council spokesman said: “We received a complaint about damage to the road surface on Wednesday (28 Aug)."
