Proposals to award Adam Peaty the Freedom of the City of Derby
Proposals are being put forward to award Olympian Adam Peaty the Freedom of the City of Derby.
It's the highest honour which can be handed out by a local authority and Peaty would be the first person to receive it since footballer Brian Clough.
The City of Derby Swimming Club athlete won Team GB's first gold medal at Rio in the men's 100 metres breaststroke.
Speaking about the proposal the Leader of Derby City Council described Adam as inspiring "to many thousands of people across our City."
Cllr Ranjit Banwait has also made a commitment to build a new pool in the city to encourage more people to take up the sport.
The 21-year-old athlete is to receive an open top bus tour in his home town next month to commemorate his achievements at the Olympics.
