How did the Midlands do in Rio?

Adam Peaty

Adam Peaty from Uttoxeter won Great Britain's first medal of the Olympic Games, winning gold in the 100 metres breaststroke. The City of Derby swimmer broke his own world record in the process with a time of 57.13 seconds. Peaty doubled his medal tally with a silver medal in the 4x100 metres medley relay.

Joe Clarke

Staffordshire won their second gold medal of the games after Joe Clarke from Stone became Olympic champion in the kayak K1 event in the canoe slalom.

Alex Gregory

After winning a gold medal in London 2012, Alex Gregory made it two from two in the coxless four. This was the fifth straight games that Great Britain's rowers had won gold in this event, stretching back to Sydney 2000.

Nick Skelton

Nick Skelton from Bedworth in Warwickshire added to his team jumping gold from London with a gold medal in the individual jumping event. Nick became Britain's oldest Olympic gold medalist since 1908 at 58 years old.

GB's women's hockey team

Great Britain's ladies hockey team won their first ever Olympic gold medal. Helen Richardson-Walsh from Nottingham and Lily Owsley who plays for Birmingham university scored four goals each in the tournament. Hollie Webb from Belper scored the winning penalty shuffle that sealed the gold medal for GB.

Other Midlands representatives include Shona McCallin from Newark in Nottinghamshire, Laura Unsworth from Sutton Coldfield and Georgie Twigg from Lincoln.
