Work finally underway at new Carlisle cancer centre

Building work is underway on a new multi-million pound cancer centre at the Cumberland Infirmary.

Local MP John Stevenson laid the first brick of the new facility in Carlisle on Friday. The centre will mean thousands of Cumbrian patients can be treated closer to home.

The unit will be run in partnership with cancer experts from Newcastle.

The £30m centre will house a chemotherapy day unit with 15 treatment chairs and three single bedrooms, two linear accelerator radiotherapy machines and a CT scanner suite as well as consultation, examination rooms and a small cafe area.
