Plans for a new £30 million cancer treatment centre in Carlisle have been unveiled.

The centre will be situated in a new building, next to the Cumberland Infirmary.

The old infirmary tower block, which was condemned, will be demolished to make way for it.

The new oncology centre will see chemotherapy, radiotherapy, cancer clinics and support services brought under the same roof.

The new centre will have two floors. The ground floor will be at car park level, housing chemotherapy, outpatients, other support services and a small cafe area. While radiotherapy will be on the lower ground floor, along with office space.

It is hoped demolition of the old building will start later this year to clear the site, with building work on the new centre starting in 2019. It is then expected to open in 2021.

The plans are currently artist's impressions, so are subject to change. The exact cost will also be determined in the coming months, but NHS England has allocated around £30m for the centre.
