Covid death rate falling in the Anglia region but concern about care homes

The latest official figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) show the weekly number of people dying with coronavirus in the Anglia region has fallen for the second week.

There was also a fall in the number of people dying in care homes in the area in the week ending 1st May but more recent data from the Care Quality Commission has shown a subsequent rise in deaths the following week.

The information from the ONS is the most accurate and detailed available but because it is collated from death registrations and death certificates there is a time lag in publishing the data. The figures released on Tuesday relate to the period to Friday 1st May.

In the week to 1st May, 565 people died with Covid-19 in the Anglia region compared with 770 the previous week and 957 the week before that.

The figures include people dying in care homes, hospitals, hospices and elsewhere as well as those in pass away in their own homes.
