Mandela's life in pictures

As we say goodbye to Nelson Mandela, who has passed away aged 95, we take a look at some of the more memorable images from his illustrious life.

The former South African president was the first black person to hold the office and will forever be remembered for his anti-colonial politics, which controversially resulted in him serving 27 years in prison.

He garnered much acclaim for his anti-apartheid work and in 1993 was awarded the Nobel Peace Award.

Nelson Mandela passed away on 5th December 2013 at the age of 95.
