Stan Collymore and Ricky Hatton open up about their battles with depression
You shouldn’t have to man up, sit there, have a stiff upper lip
Stan Collymore and Ricky Hatton spoke to Good Morning Britain today about the mental health problems they have both suffered.
Former striker Stan Collymore described how he was once told by a clinical psychologist that scoring goals would make him feel better while he was suffering from depression.
Speaking to Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid, Collymore said: “I wasn’t happy with that, it was ridiculous.”
“The whole point about speaking up and talking out about mental health issues, is that you shouldn’t have to man up, sit there, have a stiff upper lip. You should, at the appropriate time, if you are struggling go to your doctor, speak to a friend and say, ‘enough’s enough’.”
It’s like winning a fight in many ways - my biggest fight
We also spoke to former boxer Ricky Hatton about his experiences with depression.
The boxing champion said: “I think it was always there under the surface but when you had the success that I had, it didn’t come to the forefront. But when I got beat by Floyd Mayweather I was distraught... I genuinely thought I was going to beat him and when I didn’t it really messed with my head.”
