Chris Hughes reflects on live testicular exam a year after brother's cancer diagnosis
Former Love Island star Chris Hughes has reflected on the live testicular exam he had on the show in 2018.
Chris had previously suffered a serious health scare when he found a problem with one of his testicles. On top of that, his own cousin was diagnosed with testicular cancer. With the recent news that 68% of men don’t know how to check themselves, Chris joined our own Dr Chris in the studio to talk about his experience, working with charity Movember, and have a live testicular check-up on air.
The live check-up prompted Chris' brother Ben to check his testicles. He found a lump which turned out to be cancerous.
Thanks to early treatment, Ben recovered quickly and is now cancer-free.
Speaking to Phillip and Holly about the impact the live examination has had, Chris said: "I didn't think it would ever go as widespread as it did. I wanted to do it initially as my cousin had testicular cancer, which became secondary in his abdomen.
"For him, he missed it initially. And I've had obviously operations on my testicles, which plays out within the documentary, but the way it was received was quite astonishing. It's something I wanted to do, it's something which meant something to me...It's just been a really positive thing and it's helped a lot of people along the way, and we can't complain about that," he added.
On potentially saving his brother's life, Chris said: "It was quite overwhelming, to begin with. I was doing it to raise awareness, that's what I wanted to do, but I didn't think it would be such a crazy story that Ben, someone who is so close to me, it saved his life."
