Tyson Fury's wife Paris: 'I take every punch he takes'
She’s married to one of the most successful heavyweight boxers in the world, but it turns out Paris Fury does her own share of fighting at home.
As Tyson Fury and his family invite cameras into their somewhat chaotic household, the mum of five joins us to tell us what it’s like being married to boxing royalty, and how they balance family life with his successful career.
Explaining they were approached so many times for cameras to film their lives as “everyone finds Tyson such a fascinating character”, Paris revealed, “Do you know what, we said, ‘We’re not going to hold anything back, we’re just going to be ourselves, no airs and graces’.
“We always said no, but this time just felt the right time. We went with it and we just let them see all.”
So were any reservations about letting the cameras in? Paris confessed: “There were hesitations all of the time, for example, is it going to be a Big Fat Gypsy Wedding-style show? And we thought, ‘We’re not even going to go there if it is.’ And it wasn’t.”
Paris, who has five children with Tyson, would like to grow their family, “My granny had four boys and four girls and I always looked at that as the perfect family. And I’ve always looked and thought, ‘I’m going to have loads of children, if I can.’”
Tyson is currently away preparing for his next fight and Paris revealed: “It is very hard. When Tyson goes away, because he’s such a hands-on dad… And then you miss him and it’s sort of like me against the five! Every day is a battle. I just about win.”
On what it’s like for the family on the lead up to Tyson’s fights, Paris said: “For me, it’s obviously the time where I’m worried to death about him. I’m trying to keep the kids happy and everything rolling, they’re asking, ‘Where’s Dad?’ And I’m trying to explain to the little ones… It’s telling on you, but obviously the rewards are great and Tyson loves boxing, so…”
So does Paris thinks about Tyson losing his next fight? “I never think about him going to lose… You go into a fight, especially at this level, it’s very dangerous. There’s always the chance of serious injury, that’s very worrying for me. I don’t think he actually thinks about it. But then also with his mental health…But it’s hard because you worry if he lost, or if he loses that dedication to his boxing, will he sink back into those lows?”
Paris does watch Tyson fight, but admitted that it’s “very difficult. I remember years ago, women used to say to me, ‘Smile, you’re on camera.’ And I used to say, ‘No, the person I love is getting punched in the ring. I’m not smiling…’ You just have to accept it because it’s something that he wanted to do, but as you’re watching, I take every punch he takes. Cringing inside, I don’t look very pretty ringside… It’s getting harder, because every fight is a harder fight. Obviously, it’s higher level.”
The Furys' children have only ever watched their dad fight once. Paris revealed, “Never again. I don’t think children should be at the sport. Everyone can do as they please, but I don’t think it’s a sport children should get too involved in… It’s nice for them to watch on telly, to see Dad in the limelight, but you can always switch the telly off if things go wrong.”
And on Tyson’s eventual retirement, Paris said: “I worry what will be his aim, his focus in life. So obviously, when it comes we will cross that bridge.”
