Transform your locks with these at-home hair extensions

They're the A-listers' secret to flowing locks, with Ariana Grande, Jennifer Lopez and our very own Holly Willoughby wearing them in the past. But hair extensions are no longer just about adding length - they can be transformative for volume, and can even help cover those thinning areas. So whether you've got a big event coming up, or you just want to give your tresses a boost - Sarah Jossel is joining us to show you just how easy it is to give them a go at-home.

The difference between synthetic and human hair extensions:

Human hair extensions have a softer texture as they are made from natural protein and can retain moisture. Synthetic hair has a dryer texture as it’s not able to absorb moisture. Don’t look for cheap extensions. The better the quality of hair, the longer the extensions will stay in good condition.

How should you care for your extensions?

  • It’s important to wash your extensions every 15-20 wears.

  • You should brush them through with a wide tooth comb or soft bristle hairbrush before washing.

  • Fill the sink with warm water and sulphate-free shampoo and soak - avoiding wetting the clips.

  • Apply conditioner and leave for 10 minutes, before rinsing and allowing the hair to air dry.

Can you straighten and style extensions?

You can blow-dry extensions but if the hair is coloured keep tongs and straighteners at max 180 C heat. Anything hotter can lift the colour.
