The best hangover cures to nurse a sore head
If you’re one of the millions nursing a sore head this morning, then Dr Sara is here to get you ready for the week ahead. From handy hacks, to home remedies, she’ll be sharing the secret for banishing your hangover.
DR SARA'S TOP TIPS FOR PREVENTING A HANGOVER IN THE FIRST INSTANCE?:
Eat before you drink: Alcohol can irritate your stomach lining due to the acid it contains. Eating before drinking means that you’ve essentially ‘lined your stomach’ this can reduce the irritation caused by the alcohol. Eating food, in general, can slow the absorption of alcohol into the bloodstream too, which can mitigate some immediate effects and reduce hangover severity.
Try to stay hydrated while you drink: Between every alcoholic beverage, have a glass of water and try to remember to drink water before you go to sleep.
Pace yourself: It takes an hour to clear a unit of alcohol. You can find out how many units certain drinks have on the NHS website but to give you an idea, one measure of spirit is about 1 unit and a pint of strong lager or beer is about 3 units.
Get a good night’s sleep: Alcohol disrupts your sleep so the fewer hours you allow yourself to try and sleep - the worse you’ll feel in the morning.
Avoid driving the morning after: If you’ve got an early start at work and would normally drive in, don’t get behind the wheel as you may still be over the limit.
