Steve Carell didn't recognise Will Ferrell in new movie, Despicable Me 4!

Fourteen years after Gru and the Minions attempted to ‘steal the moon’, they’re back for another big screen outing.

Hollywood A-Lister and star of Despicable Me 4, Steve Carell, takes a seat on our This Morning sofa to give us the inside scoop about the latest film in the series that’s achieved world domination.

When Carell first took on the role of Gru, he never anticipated the enduring journey ahead. “From day one, Gru has been an absolute delight to play,” Carell says. “When we first meet him, he’s an evil, villainous criminal mastermind. But soon, we come to see that he also has an enormous heart, and a great capacity to love."

When asked about Will Ferrell's role in the new movie, Steve said, "Oh Will Ferrell! Oh I can't believe they allowed him to be in this!" However, all was not as it seemed, as it turned out the Steve had actually 'begged' him to be in the movie!

"I did kind of beg him to join..." Steve told Ben and Cat. "I threw it out there after the last one. You know, someone asked 'Who would be your perfect next villain?' and I threw Will out as a potential choice."

But Steve had no idea what Ferrell's character, Maxime, was going to sound like, so didn't even recognise him once he saw the completed film.

"I did not recognise his voice" Carell said. "I knew it was him, but I thought, is that him?! Because it did not sound like him."

"It's lovely to be a part of something like this" Carell says. So hopefully there's more to come!

What's Despicable Me 4 about?

Following the 2022 summer blockbuster Minions: The Rise of Gru, Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) and Lucy (played by Kristen Wiig) and their girls, Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edit (Dana Gaier) and Agnes (Madison Polan) welcome a new member to the Gru family, Gru Jr., who is intent on tormenting his dad.

Gru faces a new nemesis in Maxime Le Mal (voiced by Will Ferrell), and his femme fatale girlfriend Valentina (Sofía Vergara), and the family is forced to go on the run, take on new identities, and begin new lives in the picturesque town of Mayflower.

And what about new Minions?

In this new installment to the franchise, everybody's favourite Minions find themselves with new identities of their own, with five Minions set to receive a super serum, which results in the world’s newest and most chaotic superheroes: the Mega Minions!

When Ben suggested that the real stars of the movie are the Minions, Carell joked, "Thanks for throwing that in my face!" but went on to say "I give it all to the Minions."

Despicable Me 4 is released in UK cinemas on July 12.
