MPs say women should be offered free menopausal checks at 45
A report for MPs says that women should be invited for a menopause check-up when they turn 45. The report criticises the current support for women as 'completely inadequate' and calls for more help and free hormone replacement therapy (HRT) prescriptions.
Discussing the report, Dr Louise Newson said: "What it is doing, is revealing how many woman are really struggling to be listened to."
"We know the majority of women aren't receiving treatment, we know that women from low social-economy classes are less likely to receive treatment but we also know that treatment reduces risk of diseases and will actually be worth it in the long term for the NHS."
On the impact of the menopause, Dr Louise added: "Around 10% of women give up their jobs as a result of their menopause."
Journalist, Julia Hartley-Brewer told This Morning: "Do you know how many hours doctor spend in medical training on menopause? 2 hours! This happens to half the population, we need to talk about it more often."
Speaking about the lack of education, Graeme Brown, Editor of BirminghamLive and the Birmingham Mail said: "Men need to better informed about it. Everyone will be better served by knowing more about it and breaking the taboos."
