Dr Ranj clarifies the latest guidance around face masks and children
There is some evidence that face-coverings can be helpful in protecting the general population in certain circumstances.
From Friday 24 July the rules around wearing face-coverings in England will change. Unless you have a specific exemption, everyone over the age of 11 should wear them when visiting the shops, on public transport or in situations where you can't physically distance properly from those outside your household.
They are not necessary for children under the age of 11 (unless they want to wear them) - and not recommended for those under 3.
If your child (over 11) is finding it difficult, here's how you could help:
1. Talk to them in a way that they can understand and tailor your language to your specific child. Always be honest and know your facts. Older children will have seen and heard many things already so it's important to clarify their concerns.
2. Explain to them that face-coverings are mainly about protecting others, and we all have a responsibility to keep each other safe
3. Turn it into a game or fun activity - you could choose one together or even make your own!
4. Lead by example and make wearing a covering part of your normal routine. Practise together at home if it makes them nervous about wearing them outside
Not everyone is able to wear a face-covering. There are specific reasons why a person may be exempt and these should be respected. Please see gov.uk for a list.
