How to make your own Christmas wreath

Whether you've already put up your Christmas decorations like Holly or they're ready and waiting to come out of the attic, there is one must-have centerpiece that everyone needs this Christmas and that's a wreath.

But why settle for a shop bought one when you can make your very own? Here's craft expert Sophie Prescott's guide to making a showstopping wreath.

Traditional Christmas wreath

You will need:

Norton Wreath (Ready wrapped green wreath)Pine conesDried orange slicesFaux berriesCinnamon sticksBattery powered fairy lightsRibbonSnow sprayGlitterCraft wireScissorsGlue

Directions:

  • First, spray the ends of each pinecone with artificial snow spray. Leave to dry.

  • Wrap the fairy lights around the wreath and secure battery pack on the back

  • Cut strips of craft wire and thread around each pinecone

  • Begin to add each pinecone onto the wreath, spaced evenly out

  • Once happy with the pinecone placement, next cut strips of craft wire and begin to add the orange slices, cinnamon sticks and berries. Alternatively you can use glue to attach these. Slowly build up the arrangement.

  • Now add a large ribbon either at the top of the wreath or to one side on an angle

Rudolph the reindeer wreath

You will need:

Polystyrene wreathTwine/brown stringReindeer earsBrown and cream/yellow feltRed Christmas baubleGlue gunScissorsPenStapler/staple gunGold glitter spray

Directions:

  • Secure the end of the string to the back of the wreath with either a glue gun or a staple gun

  • Now start to wrap the string tightly around the wreath, making sure there are no gaps between each strand

  • Secure the end of the string to the back of the wreath with either a staple gun or glue

  • In brown felt, cut two triangle pieces for the reindeer ears

  • In cream or yellow felt, cut two more triangle pieces, slightly smaller than the brown for the inside of the ears

  • Glue the two sets of ears together, then glue onto the back of the wreath and the top, to represent Rudolf's ears

  • Cut away the antlers from the headband and glue these onto the top of the wreath, slightly higher than the ears

  • Attach the red bauble to the middle bottom section of the wreath with glue. Make sure the bauble loop is angled down, so it is just the red smooth side that can be seen.

  • Give the whole wreath a spray with the gold glitter spray

Christmas bauble wreath

You will need:

Polystyrene wreathYarn for base colourA mixed selection of baubles in varying sizesGlue/Glue gunStaple gunEmbellishments

Directions:

  • Secure the end of the yarn to the back of the wreath with either a glue gun or a staple gun. By adding a coloured yarn to the base, this will help fill any gaps that the baubles do not cover.

  • With hot glue, start to stick the baubles onto the wreath in an arrangement of your choice

  • Add any extra embellishments or ribbon

Candy cane wreath

You will need:

  • Create twelve pairs of hearts separately

  • Now glue the hearts together to form a circular shape. Glue the outer edges of each heart shape to the next.

  • Upcycle the wooden decorating with white paint and red glitter. Leave to dry.

  • Glue the wooden 'Merry Christmas' decoration to the central point of the candy cane circle

  • To make the composition more secure, cut a smaller circle from card and glue onto the back in the middle

  • Add a string loop to the top of the candy cane circle so it can be hung

  • With hot glue, start to stick the pom-poms onto the wreath in an arrangement of your choice

  • Glue the polar bear figures onto the middle bottom of the wreath

  • To finish, give entire wreath a dusting with either the glitter spray or snow spray, this will depend on your desired look
