Alice Beer's tips on how you can safeguard your car from thieves
Today in Britain just 1 in 20 reported crimes are solved by police. Last year, 2.3 million investigations into crimes were dropped before a suspect was found.
Car thefts have risen by a third since 2020, with a member of our own team becoming the latest victim just this week. As Alice Beer explains, these highly sophisticated thieves are taking advantage of a vulnerability built into nearly all new cars that allows criminals to drive your vehicle away without causing any damage whatsoever. Today she explains just how they do it, and how you can make sure you’re not the next victim.
Park your car sensibly
Just 34% of motorists with a garage always store their car in it.
If you don't have a garage or are parking away from home then try and park your vehicle in a busy, well-lit area.
Block the signal with a faraday pouch or box
Keep your keys in a signal blocking pouch, container or box. These devices help prevent signals from your keys being intercepted and manipulated by thieves.
Ask for a motion sensor enabled key
This key basically goes to sleep and will no longer receive the signal from your car until you move it.
Tracker device
Fitting a tracker to your car makes it far easier to recover in the event of theft. + If your tracker has a sticker then put it on the windscreen where it is a visible deterrent.
Steering wheel lock
Old fashioned anti theft methods are worth trying, they do the job because they are noisy and time consuming to get off.
Also the fact that they are easily seen, means the thief might walk on to the next keyless car.
