Thousands sign petition calling for action at road fatality hotspot near RNAS Culdrose

The stretch of road has seen a number of tragic incidents

Thousands of people have signed a petition calling for action to be taken to prevent further tragedy on a busy A-road near RNAS Culdrose.

Four people have been killed in incidents on a stretch of the A3083 near the naval airbase since 2018.

Most recently Samuel Vass, a 22 year old engineer, died following a collision with another car.

Daniel Thirkill, who started the petition, is calling for average speed cameras to be installed on the road.

Mr Thirkill said "We can’t afford to ignore this any longer. Recent incidents have highlighted the urgent need for action, and every day that passes without change puts more lives at risk.

"By implementing a 60mph average speed camera, we can drastically reduce the likelihood of high-speed collisions and save lives."

In December 2022, two aircraft engineers based at the nearby RNAS Culdrose died when the car they were travelling in crashed into another car.

In 2018, 18 year old Lottie Rees was killed in a motorcycle crash.

Callum Gilbert and Daniel Cox died in a crash in 2022

"We can’t afford to ignore this any longer," added Mr Thirkill.

"Recent incidents have highlighted the urgent need for action, and every day that passes without change puts more lives at risk."

In response to the petition, Cornwall Council said "We are committed to reducing the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads through our ongoing work with partners.

"Following an incident where someone has been killed or seriously injured, we will analyse data from the location and work with partners to determine if there are appropriate measures that can be taken to improve road safety."
