Tributes paid to ‘cherished member of the Royal Navy’ who died outside RNAS Culdrose

Tributes have been paid to a 22-year old air engineering technician who died in a crash in Cornwall.

Emergency services were called to a report of a crash involving two vehicles on the A3083 near RNAS Culdrose in Helston, just after midnight on Saturday 14 December.

Sam Vass, 22 was the driver of a silver Audi S3 hatchback. He died at the scene. 

One of Sam’s friends has set up a fundraising page to pay for his funeral. The aim was £500, but in just a day the target was smashed, reaching more than £7,400. 

A tribute to Sam on the page reads: “We are deeply saddened to share the tragic news of the passing of air engineering technician Sam Vass, who lost his life in a car accident on Saturday near RNAS Culdrose. 

“Sam was a cherished member of the Royal Navy, known for his dedication, kindness, and the vibrant spirit he brought into the lives of everyone he met.

“In honour of Sam's memory and to give him the heartfelt farewell he truly deserves, we have initiated a fundraising campaign. The funds raised will go towards supporting his family during this difficult time and covering the expenses of his funeral arrangements.

“Your generous contributions will not only help us commemorate Sam's life in a manner befitting him, but also provide much-needed comfort and support to his loved ones.

"Every donation, no matter the size, is a testament to the impact Sam had on all of us.

“We appreciate your support and kindness during this time of grief and healing. Together, let us celebrate Sam's life and ensure he is remembered with love and honour.” 

Two other people, driving a Vauxhall Astra hatchback, were taken to Treliske Hospital for treatment after the crash. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.

The police, fire and ambulance services attended the scene and an investigation was conducted by roads policing officers and a forensic collision investigator.
