A seal that has become a regular sight for locals in Dorset has been captured by a photographer as he enjoys his new spot on the seafront.

The seal, known by many as 'Sammy', has more recently been spotted at Greenhill Beach in Weymouth.

Members of the community have made a celebrity out of the marine mammal and a group of volunteers check on him regularly to make sure beachgoers are keeping their distance.

The animals are usually known for being elusive, but this one doesn't seem to be in a rush to move on anytime soon.

Seals spend much of their time at sea, but the most common reason for pitching up on the coastline is to rest for long periods during breeding season or moult their fur.

A British Divers Marine Life Rescue spokesperson said they are aware of Sammy's presence on the beach and are monitoring the situation.

On their website they have the following advice:

  • If you spot a seal on the beach, watch it from a distance and do not approach it.

  • Finding a seal on a beach does not necessarily mean there is a problem - do not chase it into the sea.

  • A healthy seal should be left alone.

  • Keep children and dogs away - they may look cute, but seals will defend themselves aggressively if they feel they need to.

If you find a seal on a beach, watch it from a distance. Do not approach the animal.

If you do find a seal, or any other animal, that looks like it's in danger, you can call the British Divers Marine Life Rescue rescue hotline on 01825 765546.
