This year's historic Goose Fair in Tavistock cancelled

This year's Goose Fair in Tavistock has been cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Tavistock Town Council said it had to make the difficult decision to cancel the event that was due to take place on Wednesday 14th October.

The historic event dates back to the early 12th century when farmers would drive their Christmas geese to the market.

It is estimated that it attracts around 20,000 a year to the old market town in Devon.

The Council's events team will use this time to take stock and work on next year's Goose Fair.

The council says it looks forward to 'welcoming you all back in 2021'.

The Town Mayor Councillor Anne Johnson said, “The Town Council has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Goose Fair to ensure the safety of our community during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

"I know some people will be disappointed, but they can look forward to Goose Fair 2021 when we hope to deliver a revitalised event in what we very much hope will be better and safer times”.
