Eight-year-old girl and Bristol baker among the winners at the World Pasty Championships in Cornwall

Pasty makers from across the globe have competed in the 2020 World Pasty Championships at the Eden Project in Cornwall.

One girl wowed the judges with a lasagne-stuffed version although the traditional kind was very much in evidence.

During the championships, more than 40 judges assessed nearly 200 pasties, mainly from Cornwall but some from further afield, including entries from Canada and the USA.

Top prize in the amateur category was taken by a dedicated baker from Bristol. Vanessa Farr is a previous winner and bakes her competition entries in Padstow in Cornwall to ensure they can be properly identified as Cornish.

Along with the traditional Cornish Pasties there were some more unusual fillings in the open competition. Goat's cheese, pear and walnut, ham, cheese and apple chutney and Sweet and Sour Chicken all went down well.

Eight-year-old Daisy Lovejoy from Plymouth won prizes in both young people's categories, winning the Cornish Pasty Junior class and coming third in the Open Savoury Junior section with a lasagne filling. It's a family thing - her sister and father have both had success in the past.

Technique also came under the spotlight and four of the best battled it out to be named world's fastest crimper. The traditional Cornish crimp is an art in itself and the winner was understandably nervous before the competition.

Well done to all the winners who no doubt will be looking forward to next year's competition, which will be the tenth anniversary of the World Pasty Championships.
