Wagyu beef and truffle oil - novel recipes released for Pasty Week

Traditional pasty enthusiasts should take a seat, breathe deeply, and prepare to have their tastebuds challenged.

Acclaimed Cornish chef, Chris Eden, has come up with some new recipes to challenge convention during Pasty Week.

They include fillings like Wagyu beef and truffle oil, sweet and sour chicken, and cauliflower cheese.

The exact origins of Cornish pasties are open to debate but they became popular with the county's tin miners in the 17th and 18th centuries because cutlery was not required to eat them.

The popularity of the humble pasty continues to soar with an estimated annual market value of more than £100 million.

And the original, traditional filling of beef, potato and swede, remains the most popular, according to one of the baked good's biggest producers.

The debate about what constitutes the best pasty will doubtless rage on but the argument could be settled, albeit briefly, as Pasty Week draws to a close.

The Eden Project is hosting the World Pasty Championships on Saturday, February 29, "where amateur and professional bakers from around the world battle it out to create the ultimate baked delicacy".

Pasty connoisseurs will decide whether a traditional or more unusual recipe wins the day in 2020.
