The West Country's golden girls of rowing have had a comfortable win in pre-Olympic trials at Caversham.

Heather Stanning and Helen Glover continued their solid pairing - they already have an Olympic Gold to their name, and won the women's pair at the World Cup Regatta in France.

They had the hopes of the West Country behind them today - Heather is from Yeovil, Helen from Penzance, and they both trained at the University of Bath. The pair didn't disappoint, coming in with an emphatic lead.

Primary these trials are to help finalise the boats for the European Championships in Brandenburg this May, but is a good chance to take stock of the talent on offer for the Rio Olympics.

With just 48 places in the 2016 Games, all eyes were on the West Country hopefuls as they took to the water.

Our sports reporter Chris Spittles was watching the action:

It was also a good morning for the West Country's other rowing hopefuls - Gloucestershire's Alex Gregory won in the men's pair, with Peter Reed coming in second.
