Over three feet of rain fell in Snowdonia in December. New figures from the Met Office show Capel Curig had 1012.2 mm between the 1st and 28th; the highest total in the UK.

Natural Resources Wales says many rivers in north Wales were at their highest since records began.

On Boxing Day the Seiont, the Llyfni and the Gwyrfai rivers reached new highs, while the rivers Conwy and Elwy also reached their second highest levels on record.

While the sustained rainfall over 16 days is described as being ‘one in 100 years’ that does not mean it can’t happen again in the future.

The public are being urged to take care near the coastline over concerns of flooding and large waves.

Natural Resources Wales has issued a warning of localised flooding around the North Wales coast.

The largest waves are expected to hit the coasts of Denbighshire and Conwy.

There is also large waves expected and the North and East of Anglesey early on this afternoon.

The large waves and spray could affect coastal roads, promenades and some properties during the early part of this afternoon and we are advising people to take care, especially around high tide between 10.30am and 2pm

It follows a system of low pressure on Friday, bringing with it an estimated 20mm of rain in places.

The Met Office said a 'brief respite' was expected on Saturday night, followed by more rain on Sunday morning.

Following a brief respite on Saturday night, a further frontal system will bring more rain to these same areas through Sunday morning before clearing away northeastwards during Sunday afternoon.

While these amounts of rain wouldn't usually lead to many impacts, given the saturated nature of the ground there is a greater risk of localised surface water flooding that might normally be expected. Some rivers within the area also remain high.

– Chief Forecaster, Met Office

The warning is in place until 3pm on Sunday afternoon and covers the following areas:

  • Blaenau Gwent
  • Bridgend
  • Caerphilly
  • Cardiff
  • Carmarthenshire
  • Merthyr Tydfil
  • Monmouthshire
  • Neath Port Talbot
  • Newport
  • Pembrokeshire
  • Powys
  • Rhondda Cynon Taff
  • Swansea
  • Torfaen
  • Vale of Glamorgan
