Five-week-old baby died with catalogue of injuries
Grandad guilty of murdering his baby granddaughter
A grandad has been found guilty of the murder of his five-week-old baby granddaughter.
Amelia Jones was just five weeks old when Mark Jones, 45, carried out a brutal attack in November 2012, leaving her with a fractured skull, a bleed to the brain, and other injuries to her ribs and legs.
Experts believe she had suffered a serious blow to the head as well as being violently shaken.
The court heard that Jones called his daughter first instead of dialling 999 when Amelia stopped breathing. She died in hospital two days later, aged just 41 days old.
Jones denied murdering her during a five-week trial at Newport Crown Court, claiming he had accidentally dropped her on two separate nights while babysitting at his daughter's house in Cwmbran.
Jones looked down, showing no emotion, as the guilty verdict was read out.

Jury out in trial of grandad accused of baby murder
A jury has been sent out to consider its verdict in the trial of a grandfather accused of the murder of his baby granddaughte.
Mark Jones, 45, denies murdering Amelia Jones, who was five weeks old when she died in November 2012 in Cwmbran. She had a fractured skull and a bleed to the brain, as well as injuries to her ribs and legs.
The prosecution case is that Mr Jones deliberately killed Amelia, potentially because of a grudge against the baby's father, and has repeatedly lied about what happened.
The defence case at Newport Crown Court is that Mr Jones once tripped and once fainted when he was holding Amelia, while babysitting on consecutive nights, but never deliberately hurt her.
The judge instructed the jury that they could find Mark Jones guilty of murder, guilty of manslaughter or not guilty of either offence.
