A 56-year-old man who died near Monmouth earlier this month has been named as Matthew Oubridge.

Gwent Police said they were called out to Church Street, Trellech, on Saturday 4 December following a report of a road traffic collision at 7:15pm.

At 8:40pm that same evening, the police then received a call in relation to a serious assault after a man was found unconscious and unresponsive on Church Street.

Officers and paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service attended the scene but confirmed that the man, who we now know was Mr Oubridge from the Chepstow area, had died.

A murder investigation has been launched and a 40-year-old man remains in police custody after he was arrested on suspicion of murder.

Matthew Oubridge's family have been informed of his death and are receiving support from specialist officers.

DCI Matt Sedgebeer, the senior investigating officer, said: “As our investigation continues, officers will be making further enquiries so it is possible that you may see ongoing police activity as part of this work.

“Please do not be alarmed and if you have any concerns, then please do stop and talk to us.
