Thousands of cyclists make 100 mile journey from Cardiff to Tenby as CARTEN100 returns

CARTEN100 returned after being cancelled three times in the last year.

Around 2,500 cyclists have ridden the 100 miles from Cardiff to Tenby as part of a charity event that was cancelled on multiple occasions during the pandemic.

The event organisers of CARTEN100 say it started with just four riders in 2004, but the event grew in popularity with more and more friends, colleagues and acquaintances joining in.

The 2019 event was cancelled due to storm 'Hannah', before three prospective dates in 2020 and earlier in 2021 were also cancelled due to pandemic restrictions.

Organisers say CARTEN100 is not a race and aims instead to encourage all abilities of rider.

"Our ride is not a sportive or a timed race. We welcome all levels of riders from experienced cyclists to those who are new or coming back to cycling", the organisers said prior to the start of the roughly 13 hour ride.

"From the outset of CARTEN100 the two main objectives of this fun cycle are to set an achievable challenge for novice riders to encourage them to become fit and enjoy cycling, and to raise money for good causes - in 2018 we celebrated a million pounds raised", they added.

The trip is more than 100 miles and is done over a 13 hour period.

Cyclists on social media said the conditions were very favourable for Saturday's ride.
