Man jailed for wiping blood on police officer's face in Haverfordwest

A man who wiped blood on a police officer's face minutes after the weekly clap for carers campaign has been jailed.

Darren Connolly, 35, was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker in April.

Dyfed Powys Police were taking part in the showing of gratitude to NHS staff by clapping at 8pm when they were called to a report of a fire in Augustine Way in Haverfordwest.

Officers attended, along with colleagues from the fire service, and found items had been set alight in a garden.

They spotted that Mr Connolly's hand was bleeding, and asked him to wash it off. He did not comply, instead wiping the blood onto an officer’s face.

He admitted the offence at court on Saturday, April 18 and was sentenced to 24 weeks in prison, and ordered to pay compensation of £120.

Chief Inspector Louise Harries said such behaviour would not be tolerated and will be dealt with appropriately.
