A new warning has been issued to pet owners in Wales to protect animals during the hot weather this week.

RSPCA Cymru says it is ''braced'' for a surge in calls as Wales expects sustained periods of hot weather in the coming days.

The charity has released some advice for people about how to look after their pets in the harsh conditions.

Here's the RSPCA's top five tips...

  • Ensure your pet has access to shade and drinking water

  • Check every day for flystrike

  • Give your pets damp towels to lie on

  • Use cold treats from the fridge

  • Fill a paddling pool with water for your pets to cool off in

They have also issued a renewed warning to dog owners not to leave their dogs alone in cars during hot weather - even if the windows are open.

The RSPCA says awareness of the signs of heat exhaustion is key to avoiding health problems.
