Geraint Thomas and Whitchurch pub hero among St David Awards winners

A man who risked his life to stop a car driving into a crowd of people has been honoured alongside Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas at the 2019 St David Awards.

Andrew Niinemae suffered serious injuries to his leg after he risked his life to stop a car from driving into a crowd of people outside a pub in Whitchurch, Cardiff. Witnesses say that without his intervention there could have been many injuries and possible fatalities.

Geraint Thomas became the first Welshman to win the Tour de France, and just the third British rider after Sir Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome.

More than 10,000 people attended his homecoming event in Cardiff.
