Two runners die while taking part in Cardiff half marathon
Cardiff Half Marathon organisers have told ITV News that they are '100% satisfied' there is nothing more that they could have done after two runners died on Sunday.
The men, one a 25-year-old and the other 32, suffered cardiac arrests after crossing the finish line.
Chief Executive of Run 4 Wales, Matt Newman, said the emergency services reacted with 'great speed and professionalism'.
Both men received treatment by the emergency services and were taken to the University Hospital of Wales where they later died.
An eyewitness, who passed one of the men being treated by emergency services, also saw spectators trying to assist.
“There were at least two people at the scene tending to him, with a couple of spectators trying to assist...they seemed to be working fast to try and save him,” the runner said.
Heart charity Welsh Hearts described the incident as 'unthinkable'
South Wales Police said the deaths have now been referred to the coroner.
25,000 people are reported to have taken part in this year's event. The deaths are the first fatalities in the 15 year history of the race.
