Meet Llywelyn - the Royal Welsh's 'new kid on the block'

The 1st Battalion of The Royal Welsh are gearing up to welcome their newest recruit this week, Llywelyn the goat from Llandudno.

Fusilier Llywelyn was chosen from the Royal Herd who live on the headland of the north coast of Wales.

Following months of training under the close watch of Goat Major Fus Matthew Owen, Llywelyn will be honoured with a 'passing out' parade.

But the journey to ‘Regimental Goat’ has not been an easy one.

When Lance Corporal Gwillam ‘Taffy VI’ Jenkins died last year, Her Majesty the Queen had to give permission for a new recruit to be found.

Royal Welsh soldiers travelled to Llandudno to carry out a tough selection process, choosing only the most prominent and impressive young billy kid.

Llywelyn was chosen though and brought back to Wiltshire, where he was put through his paces on a strict two month training process, including an introducion to military rations, ceremonial drills and discipline.

But he's made it and has transitioned from a wild goat to a well disciplined and respected member of the 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh.

Llywelyn is now about to embark on a sparkling career, leading parades through Welsh towns and cities as well as taking part in Armed Forces Day.

He's also been invited to a parade in London as part of the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations.
